If you are a mature student without the standard qualifications to enter higher education, this one year intensive course is for you. Our Access courses build the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to progress on to higher education in the subject area you’re interested in. These courses are recognised by universities across the UK and allow entry on to higher education courses in your chosen specialist area.

Level 2

Preparation for Access to Higher Education (Health Professions) Level 2 Certificate (offered at Bedford College and Tresham College)

Level 3

Entry requirements

Level 2

There are no specific entry criteria however you will need to already have either a level 1 in maths and English or be working at that level. You will be invited to attend an interview where you will need to sit a maths and English test. Also you will need to have researched the type of career you would like to work towards, and discuss this at an information session where you have the opportunity to meet the staff. You will also need to be able to use IT to word process your work and be able to save and manage your files. You may wish to sign up for IT course at our Learning Centre before starting the course.

Level 3

All Access to Higher Education Programmes
Duration: One Year
This are one-year intensive courses aimed at mature students (19+) without the standard qualifications to enter higher education. GCSE English and maths is desirable; however, we may consider candidates without these qualifications, depending on an English and maths entry test, where you will need to demonstrate English and maths skills at Level 2, in addition to interviewing successfully. Additionally, if your first language is not English will need an IELTS score of 5.5 or higher. You will also need to have good IT skills as all of your assignments will be carried out using either Word, Excel or PowerPoint. You can undertake IT Skills classes at our Learning Centres. It is very important to research the entry criteria of the universities you would eventually like to apply to. You will often need a minimum of GCSE English and maths, in addition to your Access qualification, for entry onto degree-level courses. We currently offer GCSE part-time courses, which you can enrol on alongside your Access course to gain these qualifications. Many university courses can be very competitive and it’s important to understand and fulfil the entry requirements prior to applying.

Engineering Access to Higher Education Advanced (Level 3)
Duration: One Year
You will need a grade A*-C or 9-4 in maths, English Language to succeed on this course and Science (Chemistry/Physics) is advisable, or relevant work experience in this field may be considered. Your place on the course will be subject to a maths assessment and engineering aptitude assessment and a successful interview. A genuine interest of a career in either engineering or construction is essential.

Mature students

We also welcome applications from mature students who will be considered on relevant work experience rather than qualifications.

Course Content

Level 2 Overview

This is an intense course aimed at mature students (19+) and designed for those considering a career in the health, science or care sector in need of a progression pathway to university. It would also benefit those working within the sector to support their progression to a university degree. On successful completion you will be guaranteed a place on the Access to Higher Education courses providing that you complete the whole course and achieve English at Level 2 and maths at Level 1 or above.

Level 3 Overview

Animal Management Access to Higher Education Advanced (Level 3)
This pathway enables you to develop your knowledge of a range of animal related subjects for progression to higher education degree-level courses. The animal unit at Shuttleworth houses a wide range of species from around the world. There will be opportunities to gain practical experience working with these animals to enhance your experience on the course.

Business Studies Access to Higher Education Advanced (Level 3)
This Access to Business Studies Diploma is a one year Level 3 intensive course aimed at mature students (19+) without the standard qualifications to enter higher education. This pathway enables you to develop your knowledge of a range of business related subjects for progression to higher education degree-level courses.

Combined Science Access to Higher Education Advanced (Level 3)
This one-year course will provide you with all the skills and knowledge in science you will need to progress onto a degree-level course.

Computing Access to Higher Education Advanced (Level 3)
This Access to Computing Diploma is a one year Level 3 intensive course aimed at mature students (19+) without the standard qualifications to enter higher education. This pathway enables you to develop technical and professional skills to prepare you for the challenges of a computing discipline on your chosen higher education course.

Engineering Access to Higher Education Advanced (Level 3)
Aimed at adult learners over the age of 19, this course provides you with the opportunity to study a Level 3 qualification, on a full-time basis, leading to progression on to a higher education qualification. You will focus on developing core skills and knowledge in maths and science.

Nursing & Healthcare Professions (Midwifery) Access to Higher Education Advanced (Level 3)
This course will provide you with all the skills and knowledge you will need to progress on to a degree-level course in midwifery or nursing.

Psychology Access to Higher Education Advanced (Level 3)
This pathway enables you to develop your knowledge of a range of psychology related subjects for progression to higher education degree-level courses.

Social Science and Social Work Access to Higher Education Advanced (Level 3)
This year-long Level 3 course will provide you with all the skills and knowledge of social work/crime psychology you will need to progress to study a degree-level course.

Teacher Education Access to Higher Education Advanced (Level 3)
This one-year course will provide you with all the skills and knowledge in primary teacher education that you will need to progress onto a degree-level course.

Course Structure
Your full-time Further Education course will consist of a study programme. This means that alongside your industry-recognised qualification, you’ll also study English and maths and improve your personal and employability skills. In short, your study programme will provide you with:

Our Higher Education programmes can be studied either full-time for two days per week or part-time one day per week. Teaching methods include lectures, practical sessions, group work, tutorials and workshops. In addition, substantial learning resources and support material are available online for home study.
